From this April 28, Bitrefill users in the United States can use a new service called Bill Payments to pay with bitcoin credit card bills, utilities, health care, mortgage payments and even taxes.
The information was released with a message posted on the Bitrefill Twitter account, in which it is indicated that with this system is it possible to pay with cryptocurrencies up to 20,000 types of invoices.
At the moment, those interested in the service can register to be included in a waiting list, due to which they still have “scale restrictions”. They will gradually be allowed to have early access in the mobile applications for iOS and Android.
Bill Payments launches in collaboration with CBW Bank, a regulated financial services provider in the United States. That is why those who access the service will have to verify their account by sending the identity document and proof of residence.
As explained on the Bitrefill website, to use Bill Payments users, after registering in the application, must search for their invoice in the corresponding institution, fill in the required spaces, provide the ID or account number of the invoice and place the amount to be paid, and then choose the payment method.
The application offers the option to pay several bills at the same time, if they are added to the platform cart before canceling. However, there is a maximum payment limit of up to USD 10,000.
Bitrefill will charge a commission of 2% on the total of the invoice that is paid through Bill Payment.
“It’s about the cost of paying and processing each invoice. The total amount of this commission will be clearly displayed both at the time of adding an invoice to the cart and during the checkout process,” as they explain.
It is further clarified that, for now, these bill payments must be made separate from those of gift cards and phone recharges.
Bitcoin bill payments were activated first in El Salvador
Bitrefill inaugurated this modality of paying bills with cryptocurrencies in El Salvador, in November last year, shortly after the enactment of the Bitcoin Law. The company decided to set up a physical headquarters in this country following the adoption of BTC as legal tender.
As reported at the time by Criptonews, with Bill Payments Salvadorans can afford about 150 different services, including water, Internet, loans, mortgages, taxes, universities and others.
The CEO of Bitrefill, Sergej Kotliar, was in charge of giving the news during the Adopting Bitcoin event. Currently, the director estimates that, in the Central American country, the bill payment service with bitcoin has been growing between 100% and 200% per month.
It should be remembered that, until now, one of the main products of Bitrefill – using cryptocurrencies – has been the offer of prepaid cards with bitcoin, valid to purchase products and services from various countries worldwide. This is a service available since 2018, when the company decided to incorporate payments with cryptoassets.
